Devika is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM professional who founded Sohum Financial Planning LLC in 2019 after moving her previous business - Kamboh Financial Planning- from New York City to Pagosa Springs, CO. “Sohum” in Sanskrit means to be in balance with the universe – she intentionally wants to create this experience and state of complete well-being for all her clients starting with a sound financial plan as the foundation to reach their life goals.
As a 20 plus year industry veteran, she focuses on complex financial planning issues for clients that cover estate planning; investment & wealth management; tax planning; insurance & risk management; college planning; retirement income and long-term care planning. For Business owners and corporations, services include employee benefits planning, key person bonus carve outs & insurance, group health insurance, retirement plans & business succession planning; She completed certifications as a Special Needs Planner and is a staunch advocate for the special-needs community. She embarked on this mission by providing educational workshops to parents and caregivers of dependents with special needs through what was then the MetLife Center for Special Needs Planning in 2006. “The underlying aim is to provide a one stop shop for all financial planning needs that our clients have by partnering with tax & legal experts and being a true fiduciary looking out for our clients' best interests.
Devika has held leadership roles through most of her professional life. She was the President of the Financial Planning Association of NY (FPANY) in 2018 and was an active Board member since 2006. After a brief sabbatical as a board member she joined the NYC Board again in 2015 as the Director of the high-profile Annual Forum. She has volunteered at various non-profits to help spread financial literacy – these have ranged from giving pro bono financial education sessions at the NY Public Library to domestic violence shelters like Sanctuary for Families, and nonprofits like The Doe Fund and Project Renewal that helps the homeless in NYC. She has also conducted financial literacy workshops at Drug Rehab programs like the Samaritan Village in mid-town Manhattan. As a Board member of the NY Chapter of Women in Insurance and Financial Services (WIFS), she rang the opening bell at the NYSE to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the WIFS on December 27, 2011. She was an active Board member of the NYC chapter of the Executive Women in Golf Association (EWGA) between 2014-2016 right after serving as the President of her Condominium Board in Harlem, NYC.
Following her vision to serve the local community groups through financial literacy, Devika briefly became a member of the Association of Financial Educators (AFE) in June 2020. Prior to that she has hosted seminars for physicians & affluent professionals covering current financial issues and has close ties to the South Asian community where she has sponsored events for various community associations. In 2011-2012, the Queens & Long Island chapter of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) recognized her for 10 years of service & education to their organization.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Lady Shree Ram College for Women in India and got her MBA degree in Scotland from the Strathclyde Graduate Business School in 1998 before deciding to start her career in the financial sector in NY in 1999. She enjoys the outdoors & many sports while continuing her pro bono work helping local communities. She is currently creating programs that help non-profits collaborate more effectively and founded the Sohum Global Foundation in 2019 that focuses on women & children at risk, veterans with special needs and nature conservation efforts.
